Oil wells

Oil is a fossil fuel, like coal and natural gas. It is the remains of tiny plants and animals which lived in the sea millions of years ago. When they died, they sank to the bottom and were covered by layers of mud and sand. Over the years, the mud and sand slowly turn to rock. Eventually, the weight of rock, combined with heat and the activity of bacteria, changed the animal and plant remains into oil(and natural gas). Deep down under layers of solid rock, the oil became trapped in the holes of porous rock, rather like water in a sponge. The geological name for this oil is "petroleum".
