At the refinery, crude oil is separated into several substance, starting with a process called "fractional distillation". This take place inside a tall distillation tower.The crude oil is heated until most of its liquids boil and turn into vapours. These vapours rise up, cool and become liquids again at different temperatures, so they flow out of the tower at different levels.The thicker heavier liquids are broken down further in a process called cracking, making more petrol and light oils.
